Title
Surb Astvatsatsin Church in Old Crimea
Image Description and Historical Context
The postcard shows the Armenian-Gregorian Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) in Old Crimea (Stary Krym). The original church was built between 1375 and 1410, according to Armenian archaeologists, but underwent significant reconstruction in the 19th century. Notably, the renowned Armenian artist Ivan Aivazovsky contributed to its interior frescoes. The church features a traditional Armenian architectural style with its octagonal dome and detached bell tower. It was later converted to a Russian Orthodox Church in 1921, after which it remained a key religious site. The church was demolished in the 1960s, and in its place, the Church of St. Panteleimon was constructed.
